Abstract

Francois-Elie Maillefer produced one of three definitive biographies of his uncle, John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The Maillefer biography is often characterized as the most accessible - a thorough yet concisely written account of De La Salle's experiences and spiritual teachings. In this essay two renowned Lasallian scholars offer readers of all three biographies a critical lens through which to understand Maillefer's involvement in De La Salle's story; his purpose in situating his account among the De La Salle biographies; and an understanding of his sources. Equipped with this refined lens, one is invited to encounter all of the De La Salle biographies and through them, to more fully comprehend the necessity of synthesizing complementary views of the contemporary Lasallian educational mission and our respective roles within it.
