The author provides an authoritative and clear reflection on best uses for a key document of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also referred to as De La Salle Christian Brothers, The Brother of the Christian Schools in the World Today: A Declaration (Declaration). The Declaration is an essential resource for renewal and an enduring reminder of the Institute's origins in the creative principle of the Holy Spirit. A recognized origins document, the Declaration grounds the Brothers' individual and collective discernment about their respective roles as agents of renewal amid dyamic transformation in and around Lasallian ministries worldwide. This essay retains value some twenty years after its only, limited-edition publication in part because of the author-scholar's close familiarity with Second Vatican Council-era developments within the Institue and in the Catholic Church.
