This article narrates the emergence of what Lasallian scholars now understand as "association", through the stages of planning for the first Brothers' community, and a number of critical events during the founding years of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Careful attention is paid to how the founder, John Baptist de La Salle, and the early brothers experienced the transformative commitment to provide a human and Christian education by operating gratuitous schools. Originally presented by the scholar author to administrators of Lasallian institutions in France during a meeting of Association La Salle in November 1998, the text serves as an important resource for interrogating and authenticating current conversations about Lasallian association.
