Lasallian higher education in the twenty-first century is at once rooted in the 300-year-old Lasallian tradition while soaring into cyberspace for learning opportunities. A Lasallian education is a practical education based in a relational pedagogy, where professors are the “older brothers and sisters” of our students, where we set a high standard and provide scaffolding to meet our students where they are and provide tools to help them achieve the standard of excellence. Advising from a developmental perspective will assist our students in gaining skills, experiences, and dispositions as they make well considered choices in their own educational stories, and retain self-authorship. Electronic portfolios, or e-folios, are presented as a tool that will assist in developmental advising, making our face to face meetings more valuable and more relational. Additionally, e-folios may help us to learn “together and by association” by connecting with institutions around the world and across cultures.

Elizabeth E. Seebach, Ph.D.
Elizabeth Seebach, PhD, serves as an associate professor and department chair for the psychology department at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Elizabeth is interested in the scholarship of teaching and learning, body image, Lasallian pedagogy, and issues related to mental health of children and families. Her doctoral work in clinical psychology and postdoctoral work in pediatric neuropsychology led to both her academic career and a ten-year career in clinical practice, working with people with a wide range of mental health issues, including eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and brain trauma sequellae.
